i just got back today from a month in sri lanka and it was nearly my last trip!
caught a viral fever while volunteering at a hospital for tsunami victims.
long story but if it wasn't for a young english med student, i could be a statistic now.. this experience has taught me how precious and fragile life is and how easy it can disappear.
Man the cricket! The English doctor dragged me to the Colombo cricket club to watch the last test. I'm feeling seedy and he's rubbing it in with every wicket. He was pissed at the draw. Wanted to kill the Kiwi umpire. Think he went blind on that lbw I must admit. Otherwise great season(yes the other Poms rubbed in the win)
doofy's viral infection has him talking in tongues.
when i was an active witness it was quite noticeable that when world shattering events took place, such as a disaster, tensions between major nations, war in iraq or events like that of 9/11 the meeting attendance would drastically improve.
this was mainly due to ones whom you rarely saw flocking back because they thought armageddon was coming.
what if this almost impossible scenario occurred.
(Feeling feisty tonight!!!)
doofy,
you deserve free beer for a week, hell a year even. glad you are safe...and feisty!!
meeting jehovah's witnesses at your door was a fresh, new experience.
they were nice, friendly and smiled real big.
along with your bible study you received an instant life.
I don't like the idea of being BIRD FOOD!!!!
hi E,
yeah, i never wanted the birds to eat the eyeballs out of my carcass either. yikes!
Well, I am the sort of person who in the past placed trust in things, and in the end had my trust broken
that's a real big one. i was taught not to trust anyone that wasn't a witness. now i don't trust anyone who is. kinda limits my "people i can trust" list.

The other tactics did not mean much to me. promises about paradise etc... The family, friends issue kept me from leaving.p.s. I did not leave still in the borg, but not a drone....
Danny
Hi Danny,
it's interesting you are still a witness. how do you do it? Sorry haven't read about your life yet.
since the promise of paradise doesn't mean anything to you...you must not believe the doctrine. so, fear of losing your family keeps you a witness? what if that fear was gone and your family would love you no matter what. would you stay a witness?

Meeting Jehovah's Witnesses at your door was a fresh, new experience. They were nice, friendly and smiled real big. They offered you a group of instant friends and the possibility of being perfect and never dying. Along with your Bible Study you received an instant life. People who loved you and a purpose for living. You didn't have to think anymore, everything was all planned out for you. It's a beautiful spiritual paradise now and an even more grand paradise in the future where everyone and everything is wonderful. You just have to believe and the rest is taken care of.
It sounds too good to be true?
It is.
Once you are enticed by all the niceties (a few weeks, months, years in), then the trap is set. You are told, now that you believe (wish for, hope, want, need) in the paradise, there are a few things you have to give up. Your church, your worldly family (which could include your husband, wife, children, mother, father, brother, sister et al.), your career, your hobbies, your wardrobe, your holidays, your love life, your music, your thoughts, your aspirations, your money, your time, your life.
ok, so you want the paradise really, really bad...and giving up all those things mentioned doesn't seem that much to exchange for it. Now you are baptized. Now you are in the group. You have everything, and they have you.
Now the question is...how do they keep you?
Easy.
They got you to give up all you had in exchange for what they offered. Now they threaten to take it all away.
If you do not do everything they tell you, in the exact way they say...you will not be able to live in paradise.
PLUS, everything we have given you...your church, your new family, your new life will be gone as well. You will end up a poor, lonely person with an empty, useless life and nothing to look forward to only death in disgrace.

A semi-simplistic look at a complex issue.
Since I was raised as a witness...my scenario was not exactly like the one pictured. However the tactics that were used to keep me a witness were the same. I was told that Jehovah watched everything I did. That if I did anything wrong, I would be displeasing Jehovah. I would displease my family and the entire congregation. I would succumb to Satan and be sucked into his world. I would die a horrible, disgraceful death at Armageddon AND no one would talk to me.
So, I stayed.

Jehovah's Witnesses use blatant and subtle "scare tactics" to keep their members. On a daily, weekly, monthly basis they are constantly reminded through talks, articles and graphic pictures what will happen if their members to not comply, conform and submit. If you are, were or are considering being a Jehovah's Witness...what "scare tactics" do you see working on you?
this topic is a spin-off of another, but i'd like to hear people's opinions.. since the witnesses spew numerous biblical passages which seem to justify their beliefs and practices, who's exactly to blame for their less-than-human approach to life?
what laws do the jws live by that are not justified in some way by the judeo-christian bible?
is shunning justified in the scriptures?
if the bible were a dish prepared by god...
the jws froze and reheated it to the point it makes me want to puke.

maybe if someone tied me up and tortured me...oh wait, no i'd enjoy that.
um, maybe if i was promised a few million dollars and a vile of youth serum... i'd think about it. but, there'd have to be a few changes.
meetings would start around 11:45 and end at noon with cocktails. only well endowed women would be allowed in if they were bra-less and hot...hunky millionare men (who were also well endowed) could mingle around the hall, and everyone was allowed to have sex with whomever and wherever they liked.
ok, so if they gave me a few million dollars, a vile of youth serum and the kingdom hall was actually the playboy mansion...you may be on to something.
having them judge me just makes them think they still have power over my life. guess what people...it's my life. they can say whatever they wish (and they do). if they want to put a label on me, that's fine...i don't have to wear it.
i've never been officially "outed" by the congregation, but unofficially it's been rumored that i have done everything from having sex with satan to flying over the kingdom hall during the prayer.
if they put the giant "D" stamp on my forehead, i'll wear a cute floppy hat over it and smile real big. i would just hope my few close jw friends and relatives could deal with it. they are pretty good at loving me anyway, but i'm not sure how they'd react when faced with the "death" sentence themselves.

yep that's right if you are a white boy you are most probably a serial killer, because richard ramirez and wayne williams were only flukes.
never you mind anyone on the planet could be a potential serial killer, all we know at this point is most of the ones we have caught are whiteys...see?
i told you so!.
i've always understood that your average (and i use that term loosely) serial killer is a middle aged, lonely white guy with above average intelligence. (funny how most of this board fits this profile bwah ha ha ha ha)
what i never understood is why these white serial killers always developed such bizarre killing habits. Charles Manson. Son of Sam. John Wayne Gacy. Jeffrey Dahmer. Hannibal Lecter.
i really can't name one black serial killer who ate little boys while gazing demonically into his clown painting.
are black guys really not wired to be mentally unbalanced bloodthirsty predators? it's true, you don't see many 'brothers' in horror movies. hmmm
maybe it has something to do with the media. maybe only white people killing white people make for good headlines. most black killers kill other black people. white people as a majority really don't care about that. and why is it that the US produces the most number of serial killers?
maybe black people are out there storing legs and thighs in their freezer for the next family picnic and we just don't know or care about it. look at the louisiana serial killer...everyone thought he was white based on the profile, until they analyzed a piece of tissue with the killer's dna and found out that he was 85 percent of African ancestry and 15 percent American Indian.
and what happens when a middle aged black man turns white? does the probability of becoming a serial killer increase?
